Seit 16.Juni 1988 ist Gerhard Gruber Stummfilmpianist. Mit dieser Gaumont-Maschine begann es, welche aus dem Jahr 1899 stammt und nach Restaurierung durch Markus Häupl in Linz, Österreich der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt wurde. Für Gerhard Gruber war es der Einstieg in eine bislang 35-jährige innige Stummfilm-Beziehung, die hoffentlich noch sehr lange weiter besteht.
Gerhard Gruber has been a silent film pianist since June 16, 1988. It all started with this Gaumont machine, which dates back to 1899 and was presented to the public in Linz, Austria after restoration by Markus Häupl. For Gerhard Gruber it was the beginning of a so far 35-year intimate silent film relationship, which hopefully will continue for a very long time.
Begonnen hat es mit Kurzfilmen von Charlie Chaplin. Inzwischen hat Gerhard Gruber international in unzähligen Aufführungen mehr als 650 verschiedene Stummfilme begleitet.
It all started with short films by Charlie Chaplin. In the meantime, Gerhard Gruber has accompanied more than 650 different silent films in countless performances worldwide.
Für "Metropolis" wurde Anfang der 1990er Jahre eine eigene 35mm-Kopie erstellt, mit der den jungen Menschen quer durch Österreich der Stummfilm näher gebracht wurde.
A special 35mm print was made for "Metropolis" in the early 1990s, which was used to introduce young people across Austria to silent film.
Der nächste "Wanderfilm" war "The Freshman" aus dem Jahre 1925 von und mit Harold Lloyd. Diese wunderbare Komödie wurde wiederum Schülern in ganz Österreich gezeigt.
The next "traveling film" was "The Freshman" from 1925 by and with Harold Lloyd. This wonderful comedy was again shown to students all over Austria.
Es folgten für Gerhard Gruber unzählige Aufführungen. Der Stummfilm hat ihn nunmehr weltweit von Los Angeles bis Neuseeland, von Murmansk bis Australien geführt.
Countless performances followed for Gerhard Gruber. Silent film has now taken him from Los Angeles to New Zealand, from Murmansk to Australia.
Ein langer Weg
"Als Kind von etwa 11, 12 Jahren sah ich im Internat meine ersten Stummfilme. Dort, wo sonst - weitaus nicht so spannend - physikalische Experimente stattfanden, sah ich meine ersten Stummfilme. An Sonntagen gab es immer wieder u.a. die Komödien mit Ch. Chaplin, Buster Keaton oder Laurel&Hardy.
Für mich wurde die Leinwand zu einem Fenster in die (zumindest innere) Freiheit, Fluchtweg aus dem nicht so einfachen Internatsleben der 60er Jahre.
Und doch sollte es noch viele Jahre dauern, bis ich wieder intensiver mit dem Stummfilm zusammentreffen sollte.
Allerdings war es an jenem 16.Juni 1988 in Linz mehr als ein Zusammentreffen - es war eine Naturgewalt, auf jeden Fall für mich. Ich erinnere mich an meinen knallroten Kopf, wie ich mich mit höchster Begeisterung in die Filme hineinfallen ließ, eins wurde mit Typen und Bewegungen, mit den Geschichten und den großen Meistern des Stummfilms."

A long way
"As a child of about 11, 12, I saw my first silent films at boarding school. There, where otherwise - far less exciting - physical experiments took place, I saw my first silent movies. On Sundays there were always the comedies with Ch. Chaplin, Buster Keaton or Laurel&Hardy, among others.
For me the screen became a window into (at least inner) freedom, a way of escape from the not so easy boarding school life of the 60s.
And yet it would be many years before I would encounter silent film again more intensively.
However, that June 16, 1988 in Linz was more than a meeting - it was a force of nature, at least for me. I remember my bright red head falling into the films with supreme enthusiasm, becoming one with types and movements, with the stories and the great masters of silent film."
Seit 2005 spielt Gerhard Gruber vermehrt im Ausland. Seine Stummfilmaufführungen führten ihn rund um die Welt.
Since 2005 Gerhard Gruber has been playing more and more abroad. His silent film performances have taken him around the world.
